Three Simultaneous Atlantic Hurricanes For First Time in Seven Years

The National Hurricane Center certainly has its hands full.

There are three active hurricanes in the tropical Atlantic basin for the first time in almost seven years, including powerful Category 5 Irma. According to Dr. Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University, three Atlantic hurricanes haven’t been active at the same time since September 16-17, 2010.

On Wednesday, two other hurricanes formed, Jose and Katia. Neither appear to pose a hazard to the United States at this time, but they’re part of what’s been an extraordinarily busy Atlantic basin hurricane season. So far, 11 named storms, including six hurricanes and at least two major hurricanes have formed, and there will likely be several more before the season officially ends in late November.

The climatological peak for hurricane season in the Atlantic basin is September 10th, meaning the hurricane season isn’t even halfway over yet.
