Tesla has started to take $1,000 deposits for its solar roof tiles to be delivered by summer of 2017.

CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the company will be accepting orders for the tiles from later this afternoon:

The roofs are cheeper than many expected. According to Tesla, “typical homeowner can expect to pay $21.85 per square foot for a Solar Roof.” Tesla released a calculator on their site where any homeowner in the U.S. can estimate cost based of data from Google’s Sunroof project.

Tax credits also help with the overall cost: The 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit applies to the cost of the solar tiles and associated solar energy equipment as well as the cost of the Powerwall batteries. To receive the full tax credit, you must have federal income tax liability that’s at least equal to the value of the tax credit. This credit may be carried over to future tax years. Additional state, local or utility solar incentives may apply but are not included in this calculation.

Musk added in a press conference, “When you think of a sustainable energy future, you want roofs to be beautiful and generate energy from the sun. That energy can then charge Powerwalls and electric vehicles. That’s the future we want.”

Tesla will begin taking preorders on two of their roof styles:

Tesla has so much faith in its tiles, they are offering what they are calling an “Infinite Tile Warranty.”

According to Tesla their roofs are, “Made with tempered glass, Solar Roof tiles are more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles. That’s why we offer the best warranty in the industry – the lifetime of your house, or infinity, whichever comes first.”

A hail test has been released to test the durability of the product.

But what about the energy created? Tesla says, “The value of energy your Solar Roof produces may exceed the cost of the roof, earning you value over time.”

Tesla says they manage the entire “Solar Roof experience—from the removal of your existing roof through design, permitting, installation, operations and maintenance of the new Solar Roof.” The company estimates that the installation should take roughly the same time to install as a tile roof installation, which is typically 5-7 days.

The company even plans to offer financing, “We plan to offer financing in the U.S. in late 2017. In the meantime, you may be able to finance your Solar Roof with a personal loan, a home improvement loan, a home equity line of credit or other second mortgage product”.
