Did you know that during the first full week of October around the globe we celebrate World Space Week?
It was back in 1999 that the United Nations General Assembly established this holiday, which is an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.
“World Space Week is important to me because it invites people of all age groups from across the globe to celebrate accomplishments in space and how it benefits us here on Earth,” said Lisa Callahan, Lockheed Martin Vice President and Honorary Chair of World Space Week 2021.
There will be thousands of events that will be taking place over the course of the week that millions of people from across more than 90 countries will be attending both virtually and in person. These events are put on by schools, space agencies, museums, and aerospace companies to name a few.

Last year, the theme was “Satellites Improve Life” with more than 6,500 events spanning across almost 100 countries around the globe. The theme for 2021 is “Women in Space” that will be highlighting and celebrating those who have contributed to the space sector over the decades and those who will contribute for years to come.
“It creates access and opportunity for everyone to find their place in the new global space ecosystem,” said Shelli Brunswick, Chief Operating Officer of the Space Foundation.

“The Space Week is important today like never before because there has never been a time where there’s more opportunity to research in and from space,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, Ph.D., NASA’s Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate.
