For the first time in 5 years the ice caves have emerged near Bayfield, WI in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Here are some amazing images from there thanks to Adam Scott!

Cold Star to 2014
Part of the reason for the ice caves emerging once again is the fact that it has been a very cold start to 2014. Take a look at the North America temperature anomaly so far this month. Note how much below average the eastern half the U.S. is and especially near the Upper Midwest. Meanwhile, the western half of the country has been quite a bit warmer than average to start the year.

Cold Week Ahead
Surprise, surprise… it appears that the eastern U.S. will be cold once again this week as our persistent trough of low pressure shuffles cold air south of the international border. Here’s the temperature profile a few thousand feet off the ground and note the how cold it looks in the eastern U.S.
Cold End to January
According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the 6 to 10 day temperature outlook keeps the eastern U.S. much colder than average. Meanwhile, the western U.S. looks to stay MUCH warmer than average through the end of the month.
Snowfall Forecast
Within this trough of low pressure, several impulses of energy will take shape. The first of many clippers will run through the eastern U.S. from PM Monday – Tuesday with shovelable snowfall potential. Here’s the latest snowfall forecast, which suggests heavier amounts from along the Appalachians to Long Island and near Boston.

As a Direct Tv viewer I’m glad to see a real weather channel in Weather Nation.I never had much use for the weather channel.When I want the weather I get it with Weather Nation. Not a reality show. This is typical of the NBC owned Weather Channel.
Thank you so much for “drama-free” weather. The simplicity is very refreshing and quite a nice break from the pace of my own real life.
The weather channel has gotten worse every year since it was bought out by GE / NBC.
I stopped watching it all together when they decided to name winter storms. If weather nation goes back to all weather 24hrs a day you will be a big success.

I’ve been a Directv customer for 14 years and do not miss the Weather Channel. It certainly changed for the worse after NBC bought them. WeatherNation is a nice alternative. You get to the weather in a straight forward way. Best of luck.
I was an avid viewer of the Weather Channel until they stopped concentrating on the weather.
If I want to see a series on prospectors, or truck drivers, I would watch Discovery or some other channel. The Weather Channel has lost its way.
I’m glad Directv dropped them.
WeatherNation is what I want to see. When I put on a weather related channel, it’s weather I want to see.
