Blizzard Warnings in New Mexico, Heavy Snow in the West

24 Mar 2017, 2:17 pm

Strong wind and heavy snow has been driving through the Front Range, with white-out conditions in the last 24 hours east of Denver to east of Santa Fe. Up to 9″ of snow has fallen along with 60 mph winds, creating significant blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard Warnings continue in parts of New Mexico, with Winter Storm Warnings for Colorado. Yesterday saw record highs in the 70s, but temperatures have tumbled today with readings in the 30s.

A few more inches of snow may accumulate this afternoon along with high winds. Where it isn’t snowing, High Wind Warnings are in effect for gusts above 50 mph.

Further west, heavy snow is possible in the Sierra Nevada. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued as 1 to 2 feet of snow will fall through this weekend.

With additional rainfall ahead in portions of the West, coupled with melting snow, flood concerns continue. Flood Watches and Warnings remain in effect as moisture begins to increase again later tonight.

As one system departs the region into the Plains, another one moves ashore from the Pacific Ocean. The flow of moisture will continue with heavy rain and snow possible through the weekend and into early next week.
